Our Partners: The River Wey Society
Protecting Weymouth’s Rare Chalk Stream
The River Wey is the lifeblood of our valley, flowing 5.5 miles from the Upwey Wishing Well to Weymouth Harbour. As one of only 161 chalk streams in England, it is a globally rare habitat that requires dedicated protection.
What They Do
The River Wey Society is a volunteer-led group that acts as the "eyes and ears" of the river. Their work is vital for our community:
River Watch: The river is divided into five sections, each monitored by a dedicated officer to track water levels and wildlife health.
Flood Resilience: They work closely with the Environment Agency and local councillors to campaign for better flood defences, particularly around Radipole Lane and the Swannery.
Wildlife Conservation: From protecting kingfishers and water voles to managing bank erosion, they ensure the river remains a haven for Dorset’s biodiversity.
Why We Support Them
Environmental health is a pillar of a strong community. By supporting the River Wey Society, we help protect our local homes from flooding and preserve the natural beauty that makes Weymouth unique.
Get Involved: The Society represents over 90 local households. They host regular talks at the Southill Community Centre and share a wealth of local history and conservation news.
